'I READ EVERYTHING.'

A SERENDIPITOUS MOMENT OR THE JOYS OF LIVING IN BURLINGTON --

This afternoon I ran into an elderly woman friend, a very hip 70something member of my parish, in the Recycle North parking lot on Pine Street. Her car was parked adjacent to mine. She was getting in as I greeted her:

ME: Hi! Good to see you.

SHE: Yeah, same here. I come to Recycle North for the books. I like to read.

ME: So do I. But I usually get my books at the library. What do you like to read?

SHE: I read everything.

ME: I have mysteries, if you'd like them.

SHE [repeating]: I read everything. Anything. [smiling & making her point, very audibly] Dysfunctional families...

ME: Bye. See you in church...

  1. Okay, I'm thick or not from Burlington or whatever - but I don't get it.

  2. Hey LarryE. It was just her closing comment to me about reading everyting...including books about "dysfunctional families."

Indeed this kind of meeting could have happened in any city. But Burlington is small (roughly 39,000 inhabitants). It's common to run into people you know.

  3. Hi, Jay, just stopping in after not visiting here for a while. Fun post! I've worked in a bookstore that buys used books, and have dealt with many a customer sellng off their used books. The owner of the bookstore always laughed about a woman customer who'd sell us all of her used romance novels, and then weeks later would RE-BUY them because she had nothing else to read!
